Christopher

I’ve been sculpting the nude for the last 50 years, a beautiful, sensual experience. I fell in love with curves, taut muscles and tendons, and bony protuberances, casting my images in bronze. Now I am on another exquisite journey; drawing and painting, adding the marvels of color and environment and narrative to my figurative compositions.

Christopher Gowell is a painter working in egg tempera and oils, a sculptor working in clay & casting in bronze, and a carver of slate memorials for Martha’s Vineyard. Based in Eliot Maine, she purchased an 1850’s Methodist Church and is the director of “Sanctuary Arts”, an artists’ residential and studio community with a “skill-based” art school and bronze casting teaching foundry. There she lives and has her studio in an active arts environment.

“I am entranced with the vibrant community I live in, so I draw and paint the folks I live with as well as the beautiful cultivated and wild landscapes on the property. The two gorgeous children who live in back are my frequent muses, as are their parents who run the bronze casting foundry. Rob and his dog Missy who are daily visitors, have had to succumb to my brushes.”
